i was just watching pretty in pink (one of my favs) and realized there’s a scene where blane (andrew mccarthy) instant messages andie (molly ringwald) – not bad for ‘86! with images too! (don’t think i’ve ever used yahoo for flirting, though.)
anyway, i also just found out it’s going to be released on dvd tomorrow as well as some kind of wonderful… can’t buy me love is already out on dvd! (yup, i’m a sucker for those 80’s flicks!)
oh yeah, i was amazed to find out that midnight madness is out on dvd! thanks for that surprise, jen!
guess i’ll add those to my list of wanted items… (it’s a long list now…)
this has got to be one of the funniest things i seen. i hate to just throw up a link without some real comments, but it’s just too funny. poor kid – at least he’ll get his 15 minutes of fame…
finally, one of the most influential films of my life is coming out on dvd! koyannisqatsi, originally released in 1983, will be out on september 17th. amazon has a two pack of koyaanisqatsi and it’s sequel, powaqqatsi (which i’ve never seen) on special pre-order. the third film, naqoyqatsi is in production now.
i don’t remember the date exactly the first time i saw this film. i was still fairly young, maybe 15? i think i was in high school, but could’ve been earlier. the film is wonderful. the film has no dialog. it’s simply beautiful.
actually, the soundtrack by philip glass had an even greater impact on my life. (note: the dvd audio version of the soundtrack’s been out for a little while now and i highly recommend it!)
i don’t think i can express, in words, any more about this movie. see it.
by the way, koyannisqatsi is hopi indian for “life out of balance”.
ok, i read every “hacker” book i can get my hands on. i use the term “hacker” in the real sense, but i’ll check out the “cracker” ones on occasion as well. some of my favs are hackers: heroes of the computer revolution and the cuckoo’s egg. i’m currently reading the fugitive game, which is a better look into kevin mitnick than takedown was. takedown was told from tsutomu shimomura standpoint, who sort of led police to mitnick after being hacked by mitnick himself. takedown was co-authored by john markoff who had really put out some bull shit about mitnick over the years – although i still have enjoyed reading a few of his books.
anyway… there had been many reports of a movie based on takedown and i come across various entries in movie databases, but never saw the movie itself. well, thanks to my buddy tony, i’m watching it right now. while it’s gone under different names, such as “hackers 2: takedown”, etc., it’s officially just “takedown”.
i’m about 40 minutes into it and so far it’s been laugh-able in many respects. i’ll need to re-read takedown to refresh my memory of the story, but i don’t think the story goes like what i’m watching. i hate when they use the term “based on the book” – so i guess that means they can screw the story up as much as they want. amanda peet is hot, though.
…
ok, just finished watching it. i’m always interested to see how the movies and tv will portray the act of “hacking code”. there weren’t too many images or equations floating around like in the movie hackers, so that’s a plus. but the story seemed too flat – one dimensional or something. i can deal with them wanting to protray mitnick as evil – i don’t like it, but i’ve come to accept it – but the movie needed more.
a few weeks ago i posted that i finished the book about a boy. well, one reason to finish the book, was to check out the movie. since the conversion of nick norby’s high fidelity from book to movie was so great, i had high hopes for about a boy. well, last sunday my sister and i got to find out… and it’s not too bad. the book is much better than the movie, but the movie isn’t too bad. most of my complaints are in the updating of the content – for example, the book makes reference to kurt cobain and nirvana which is changed to rap crap. but still, the movie’s not too bad.
i hadn’t bought any movies in a while so during my trip to media play on saturday (to pick up the new moby cd and a few others) i decided to pick up ocean’s eleven (2001) cos i heard it was good and worth buying. turns out it really isn’t a bad movie. i enjoyed it. didn’t have the same pinache of the original, but you can’t really compare it to frank and the brat pack.
well, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones lived up to my expectations. (we took a long lunch to catch it before the friday crowds.) i know many people who didn’t like Episode I, but i enjoyed it and i think II is better. of course the graphics are amazing! but the story’s pretty good too. the acting is fair – good for a sci-fi flick. ewan mcgregor is great. and yoda gets the deserved screen time he should! i’m not a star wars geek, but i’ve enjoyed all the movies thus far. people say II is predicatable, well in a way it has to be! it is a prequel to what is already known! star wars has never been the “mental candy” of the sci-fi genre (two posts in one day using “genre”, cool) as some films, such as dune and gattaca, but they’ve alway been entertaining and mostly very creative. i’m also happy to see the C3PO humor back and the all-to-childish jarjar binks kept to a minimum.
we’re planning to see it again next week in the DLP (Digital Projection) theater and will post a comparision in quality – i haven’t seen a movie on the DLP screen yet.
i just realized that david lynch directed dune! although dune is a bit strange, it doens’t fall under the “normal” stuff i know from david lynch. maybe it’s just me, but i found it odd to learn that.
