800 megs on a 700 meg cd? sure!

ok, maybe i’m into too much tech stuff… cool tech is just too cool to me. cd formats being this past weekend’s cool thing. a friend of mine downloaded a couple movies that won’t fit on a 700 meg cd… so what to do to archive them? xcd to the rescue! ok, so there’s no error correction right now, but they’re working on it. using the mode2 format and using vcd/svcd as a starting point, we’ve got a alpha product that works pretty well so far.

i tested it on the stargate divx i have which xp reports as ~770MB and goes into red on nero. using the mode2 cd maker, i was able to create a bin/cue image that nero would burn. then, using the xcd direct show filter (available on the same site) i was able to use bsplayer or mp9 to playback the file directly from the cd. cool stuff…

i’d like to get a hold of real 800 or even 900 meg cd-r’s i heard about to see how well they work. haven’t see any in stores yet, though.

oh yeah, i do realize that a dvd-r solves this problem totally, but money being tight right now, this is a cool solution…
